Did you know?

Tunisian kilims are known for the harmony of their patterns and colors. They recall the Berber history of Tunisia and differ from the Turkish or Persian kilim by their patterns, their thickness and their manufacturing technique. Tunisian kilims are very sturdy and neither too thin nor too thick : lighter than knotted rugs and thicker than Middle Eastern kilims.

Each tribe or village has its own styles and patterns. The patterns are always very tightly woven and therefore sharper and more defined than on knotted rugs. The patterns are mainly from the Berber tradition and always geometric. The triangle and the rhombus are the main motifs. They allow the craftswoman to play with colors and that is why kilims are often very colorful.

If you want a lively, lightweight and easy-care handcrafted rug, the kilim is the perfect carpet for you.

Here is the meaning of the main symbols of the Rug Kilim Jridi 96x193 cm :

Note
: Originally, the symbolism of Berber signs refers mainly to life, the fertility of the couple and the fertility of the land. Over the centuries, the meanings have often evolved or overlapped.

Yellow / ochre

In Berber culture, the colours yellow and ochre refer to sand and stars, golden light, fire and the power of the sun. Yellow and ochre are the colours of the fertile earth and eternity.

The rhombus

The diamond is the Berber carpet pattern par excellence. It appears on almost all Berber carpets in the Maghreb, whether in Tunisia, Algeria or Morocco.

Meaning 1: The diamond is an ancient Berber feminine symbol that represents woman and her beauty. It represents the womb of life, the uterus or the woman's body as a whole.

Meaning 2: The eye or the mirror: what reflects or allows one to see.The representation of the eye is in the Berber culture a way of countering the evil eye. In the same way, the mirror reflects the evil eye against itself.

The double comb

Berber carpets are woven entirely by hand without shuttle or spindle. The only accessory used by the craftswomen is the weaving comb which is used to pack the wool of the carpet. It is therefore a strong symbol associated with creativity and fecundity. It is often represented on Tunisian carpets, especially on woven carpets such as kilims and margoums.

The weaving combs of this carpet are doubled, which refers to the tree of life and its roots symbolising life, knowledge and wealth.
